STEVEN GERRARD is backing Rafa Benitez’s bid for Gareth Barry.
Liverpool boss Benitez consulted Gerrard about his move for Villa skipper Barry and his midfield star gave the plan an emphatic thumbs-up.
Stevie G is good mates with Barry in the England set-up and feels he helps bring the best out of him.
SunSport revealed on Tuesday that Benitez has made Barry, 27, his No 1 transfer priority.
He has contacted Villa boss Martin O’Neill and has told him he can have first option on the likes of Peter Crouch and John Arne Riise as part of a possible player-exchange deal.
O’Neill is keen on both but Portsmouth are pushing hard for Crouch and Newcastle want Riise.
Benitez is ready to pay £12million if no exchange can be worked out.
